DESCRIPTION:Sweet Summer Days \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n“This is the time to fly\, to create\, to investigate\, to listen\, to invent together. Start each day with a new heart and a new mind.”\n\n\n\n― Bayo Akomolafe \n\n\n\n\nOn this first day of summer 2026\, we’ll come together to remember and explore summers past. Summers of playing in the park all day\, visiting family farms\, summer camp\, and family barbecues with homemade ice cream are just a few childhood memories. We’ll share this day with the hope and intention of praying and playing our way to joy-filled days in the summer of ’26. \n\n\n\nDuring this retreat\, we’ll share memories from summers in our youth. These memories will serve as an opening into the exploration of what some have called “contemplative play.” Do these two words even belong together? We’ll use various practices to explore this concept\, such as being playful in nature\, arts and crafts\, and revisiting some of the not-so-serious things that brought us joy in our childhood. Please join us as we come together with the intention of setting the stage for experiencing the joys of summer in this period of our lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitator: Phil Mathews\, Peace Hill Board of Directors\n\n\n\nPhil Mathews\, Peace Hill Board Secretary\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPhil Mathews worked in pastoral ministry for over 30 years\, including serving as HIV/AIDS Chaplain\, Program Director for AIDS Interfaith Network of North Texas\, and a variety of roles at the Cathedral of Hope Metropolitan Community Church (MCC). While Associate Pastor at MCC of Washington DC\, he led mission teams in the Dominican Republic. His last service in professional ministry was as Pastor of Imani MCC of Durham NC. Peace Hill has become one of his “faith communities” since retiring from ministry in the church. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeasons Within is a quarterly retreat series to celebrate the equinox and solstice sponsored by Peace Hill at Avila.
