Peace Hill at Avila encourages all to take the time to slow down, to notice the fabric of our lives and the connections to one another and to the earth. As we quiet the noise coming in from our busy lives in our busy worlds, we can be nourished by stillness, thoughtful connection, and heartfelt presence. Toward this end, Peace Hill offers both events for the general public and programs for non-profits and community organizer entities.
For any organizations on retreat or at training sessions at Avila, Peace Hill offers contemplative components to their experience. Peace Hill will help incorporate varied forms of contemplation including meditation, mindfulness, reflection, prayer, walk in the woods, or to walk the labyrinth. We draw from ancient and contemporary sources across diverse faith and secular traditions. These program offerings range in time and scope to accommodate the goals of the organizational gathering. Peace Hill can also assist with planning the organizational retreat to incorporate a variety of meditative elements.
Peace Hill believes that all, and especially modern community organizers, need some type of inner, spiritual practice to sustain their work to make a more just world. Too often, as noted by Thomas Merton, we can become “frenzied activists” and cut ourselves off from our inner peace and the roots of inner wisdom that makes our work fruitful. Contemplative action is work in the world informed and sustained by one’s interior life and a deepening sense of awareness of the oneness of all living things.
